



Highway 101: Carpinteria will add a peak-period carpool lane to the freeway in each direction within the City of Carpinteria. The new lanes will tie into recently added third lanes to the south and upcoming projects to the north.
New bridges will be built over Franklin and Santa Monica Creeks. There will be freeway on- and off-ramp improvements at Santa Monica Road, Carpinteria Avenue, and Reynolds Avenue. Six new sound walls will be constructed to reduce freeway noise for neighbors.
On local streets, there will be improvements to the intersections at Santa Monica Road & Via Real, Reynolds & Carpinteria Avenues, and Bailard Avenue & the freeway ramps.





The timeline is a reference tool to show planned improvements and key closures.
The timing may change to accommodate modifications from the contractor, weather delays, and to improve construction.
Construction began in the spring of 2020 and will continue with landscaping into the summer of 2023. Highway 101 will have 2 lanes open in each direction during daytime construction. There will be nighttime closures with signed detours as needed. The new freeway carpool lanes will open near the end of 2022.



The bridges at Franklin and Santa Monica Creeks will be replaced to accommodate adding a new third lane in each direction on Highway 101 and to improve water flow in the creeks. There will be new sound walls on the bridges to reduce neighborhood noise.

The City of Carpinteria and the County are working with Caltrans and SBCAG on a Class I bikeway that will provide a connection from Santa Claus Lane to Carpinteria Avenue. This will connect a gap in the California Coastal Trail between Sandpoint Drive and Carpinteria Avenue. This will enable bicyclists to travel between Santa Claus Lane and Carpinteria.



The City of Carpinteria and Caltrans are working on improving the intersection at Santa Monica Road and Via Real to improve traffic flow along with bicycle and pedestrian circulation.
Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara is a project undertaken by Caltrans and SBCAG in cooperation with local agencies to add a new carpool lane in each direction between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. The project will improve bridges, interchanges, on- and off-ramps, and add sound walls.
